How far can we go for surviving in Iceland? To sleep, or not to sleep in the toilet: that is the question.

Not only has Jan found a job, his new head chef is one of the MasterChefs in Iceland. Life is really full of surprise and this one is a blessing in disguise.

We also got an email reply from Reykjavik Campsite asking if we could meet tomorrow. They were looking for some volunteers. If the meeting went well, we might even be able to move there immediately. No more worries about the rent anymore.

The next day

Jan went to work after we checked out form the hostel and I went to meet the campsite manager alone.

However the manager wasn’t too happy that I came alone and so the meeting wasn’t going very well. After a brief chat and introduction about the condition of the volunteering, She just told me to go around the campsite by myself and wait for her email.

Seemed we could not move now and I had no money and no where to hang around, I went back to the hostel to look for jobs online and wait for Jan. So that we can discuss about our accommodation problem.

But he came back at almost 1am.

Sleeping in toilet

We now had around 100 Euros, it’d be stupid to spend 60 Euros for sleeping just few hours. We better saved one night first and check in again tomorrow. But we needed to find a quiet corner to sleep one night here.

After searching around the hostel, Jan led me to upstair and pointed to a bathroom.

“We sleep here tonight.”

“Wh..at?! It’s a toilet!”

“Yes, no one will find us here as long as we lock the door. No matter who knocks on the door, we just don’t open it.”

“But how can we sleep in here? It’s a TOILET! It’s dirty!”

“Look! This one isn’t dirty.”

To be fair, it’s a new hostel and there wasn’t many people staying in this floor yet. The toilet was actually pretty clean.

After few thoughts, I made up my mind.

“Fuck it! Let’s do it! It’s big, it’s secured, and it’s FREE. There’s even a heater! Where else can we find a place like this?”

Compared to the other public areas in the hostel, this absolutely was the best spot for sleeping tonight.

Luckily I got a free sleeping bag in the free stuff corner of the campsite when I was wandering around there this morning. It’s perfect for now. As there’s a heater, we just slept on top of the sleeping bag as a mat, and it’s comfy enough.

I was a bit worry that someone might knock on the door but no one had ever come, not even a bit of noise at all. It became the most tranquil and undisturbed night since we were in this hostel.

To my surprise, I had a very good sleep that night.
